Final Project Blog

Hey y'all it's Dwon/Dwonivan here with my final project blog. In short, it isn't finished. Y'all were right, I was in over my head and did too much, especially since I was gone for a week. I'm just gonna turn it in the way it is.

So the story starts with the villain "Panda" who is running to the cave where all the pigs live.  The panda gets there, doing a action jump as they arrived. The scene changes to an adult pig inside the cave, playing with young pig, swinging it around. The adult pig recognizes the panda, asks "whats happening?" The panda's face starts to look sad, almost crying but they cover their face before we can see. In the process, they put their hand out. The adult pig, looking confused, asks what they are doing. The panda creates an energy ball, intending to kill the adult pig. The adult pig gets frightened asking "what's this about?" Only to be shot in the chest, killed instantly.

Overhearing the noise, two more pigs come out from the back of the cave, with their weapons ready (one has a scythe, the other has an energy blade). The pig with the energy blade is shocked, asking "what is this? what did you do?" The panda doesn't answer, only readying their weapon, prepared to fight. The two pigs dash towards the panda, panda doing the same, creating their own energy blade.

The pig with the scythe tries to slash towards the panda, which requires great strength (with the heavy scythe) however the panda is too fast for it, ultimately finishing the pig in one blow. The pig with the energy blade goes into a fit of rage, swiftly dodges the panda finishing move, punching them through the cave, then their one on one battle starts, ending in the pigs victory.

The original story was a lot longer than this but I had to cut a lot out, due to it being to late to try and finish all of it. It is still unfinished by a lot but, I can still do revisions so thats a plus. I always have trouble with line art which is what I am worried because my line art always makes the animation look worse for me, especially because I used some complex movements in this project, trying ti show how much I've improved since the beginning of the year, which I have a lot in my opinion. I chose to make a story like this because from the beginning of the year I've wanted to do a fight scene and I didn't want to go back on my word. So when I created the story I was thinking of different scenarios in which a fight scene could happen, the subject of betrayal popped into my head. I watch a lot of anime and usually a fight happens because of losing someone you care about or someone betrayed you, it all came together in the end.

I tried my best to incorporate enough principles of animation into my project and I think I did pretty good at it, well I did enough. Examples of secondary action can found throughout my project, for example when the some of the characters are running, their arms are moving along with them, which I did to get a more realistic run. I used straight ahead action for the entire project, it allowed me to get more ideas and improvise a bit if I didn't like the way a scene looked to me, I might start to experiment with pose to pose sometimes to trying to help with volume changes and to spend less time on thinking of the next movement. Appeal wasn't really my strong suit during the project but I tried to find my style a bit during this project which I ultimately did, it isn't the best I would want it to be but it is a start for me. I used follow through and overlapping action when the pig was shot in the chest and fell back,  their arms kept moving even after they were dead as they hit the ground. I also used a little bit of squash and stretch when the energy ball was shot at the pig, again to portray the illusion of fast movement.

Since the beginning of the year, I've with movement and drawing bodies, as well as proportion and perspective. Since the independent study, I had been studying really hard in drawing dynamic poses and poses that used foreshortening in it. But also I look at some anime that involve realistic sword fighting or hand to hand combat, like cowboy bebop, naruto and the fate/stay night: unlimited. I'm glad that during the critique I got a lot of comments of how I have improved a lot with my body movements and the construction of them, I worked really hard on them, but I'm still not satisfied with how they are though and I'm gonna be drawing a lot more over the summer of course. But a few scenes that I am very proud of are when the pig gets blasted and they fall back. I feel like the fall was very smooth and worked out very well for me, for that scene that used a scene from dragon ball z ( when trunks is killed by cell) as reference, I watched it frame by frame and in slow motion to get the necessary frames. I feel like I have improved drastically in run cycles and I am happy with those finally, especially the two pigs run towards the panda and power up. Also I loved the scene when one of the pigs is readying their scythe for battle, I used some speed lines and motion blurs to show quick movement and it looked great to me. But also I was able to make bodies look pretty decent and let them move well, using very little reference, which I am very proud of.

There are many things I need to improve on. I need to improve on managing my time and not going too overboard with my story, which I do a lot. I also need to improve on my speed and the amount of work I get done, I feel like I am very slow with drawing and animating. Project-wise, I really need to work on making a story that the people watching can understand what is happening without explanation, I plan on making a short story over the summer without dialogue to improve my story making skills. Also I need to storyboard more, I barley I have for any of my projects this which has led to improvising on things and creating too many ideas and trying to fit it together in a short amount of time, which has led to my downfall multiple times with late projects or unfinished projects. Also over the summer I am going to study a lot in hands, perspective, foreshortening, drawing at different angles, and backgrounds, not to mention clothing, to better suit my characters. I know it is a lot to study but I will only do it until I have a basic to intermediate study on how to do it without using too many references.

The project was a lot and I'm still not finished with it, which sucks because it is the best project I've done all year but I'm still semi optimistic and excited to show y'all the finished project in my revision. And I might do a longer version as an independent project over the summer. I feel like my idea for the project is great for me, but I need to work on my time management and speed if I wanna be better at animating. Next year I'm gonna dedicate most of my time to drawing and animating since I still Clip Studio Paint Ex so I can draw and animate on that after the summer is over. My strategy didn't work well at all to be honest, I took way too long in the pre-production stage of it and it really affected how the project looked as a whole. So next time I make an animation, I'm gonna storyboard a lot first and not spend as much time, practicing bodies and such and instead just start it with not as much practice.
