Appeal
Today we are talking about the principle of animation, appeal. So appeal, what about it? Appeal is how and animation presents itself, how it looks. For example, you can make an amazingly animated movie, video, etc. But the character or setting in said video or animation can look really dull and no one wants to look at a dull animation. Even an action in a animation that doesn't necessarily go with how the rest of the animation can still look nice and appealing. For example in Bambi, thumper notices a beautiful bunny and stops midair, well midhop. While this doesn't look realistic like the rest of the film, it is funny and brings attention towards it.
Another example would be a ball bounce, a realistic ball bounce looks great as far the animation goes but compared to a cartoonish animated ball bounce, you would probably much rather look at the cartoon ball bounce than the realistic ball bounce. The exaggeration as well the squash and stretch catches our attention far more than the realistic ball bounce, which brings to my next topic of discussion.
Appeal can be put to terms as being all of the principles of animation brought together but adding extra things to make it look better. In the article there were two drawings of Iron Man, one drawing was very proportionate and realistic with believable structure. On the other hand the second drawing was disproportionate and more cartoony. However this drawing more dynamic and while it looked flat, it supported the movement of the Iron man making it more appealing.
The article was really good at talking about different thing appeal can do in an animation, turns appeal isn't just how things look but how other principles come other while adding a little spice to it. I personally believe someone should an article like this once they have a basic grasp on the other principles.
