The principle of squash and stretch
Heyo my nerds, its Dwon with a very late and well procrastinated blog but you know still doing it. So you remember that presentation we watched about the 12 principles of animation? Well today, I'll be discussing the principle of squash and stretch (like everyone else).
Squash and stretch is a principle of animation where you change the shape of an object between squash and stretch to make it seem more alive or to give it some flexibility and make it less stiff and lifeless. A common exercise to practice squash and stretch exercise is the bouncing ball where you give the ball a certain amount of both squash and stretch as its in the air or hits the ground.
Squash and stretch isn't just applied to objects though, it can be applied to cartoon characters also. For example in the movie Wall-e that we watched two weeks ago, Eve would squash, anticipating her takeoff, then stretch for a short time after taking off. But also when a character is jumping or a cat pouncing. An example shown in the article is a face turning. The face squashes as it turns and stretch once it opens eyes and is where the head needs to be. However, there is such a thing as overdoing squash and stretch. When doing squash and stretch, it is good to not use it too much or it will start to lose its believability. Looking back at your animation (at 24 fps) the squash and stretch shouldn't be seen too much, only when watching each frame one at a time, mainly because you don't want it to be noticeable by others watching it but they know that its there. Also make sure the object isn't getting bigger or smaller as it squashes and stretches which is a common mistake that i do a lot.
I though the article was very well though out and explained the principle very thoroughly, even i learned to not do squash and stretch too much and that it shouldn't be noticeable. But a question that i would ask is, "even when the ball is falling from a high height, should there be more squash and stretch? Even if it is noticeable?"
Overall, i agree with everything in the article and it helped me out a lot, and i believe this article would really help anyone starting out in digital media, as it is an essential principle too learn for the field.
Good review of the squash and stretch
